Madeira Has Second-Highest Road Death Toll in Portugal

Madeira has the highest number of road deaths outside Lisbon, with 12 fatalities in 2024. Authorities plan to improve safety by increasing speed control and introducing new radar systems.

Madeira Has Highest Road Fatalities Outside Lisbon

Authorities have identified Madeira as having the highest number of road deaths after Lisbon. Officials have highlighted that the region has recorded more fatalities than even the metropolitan area of Porto, which has seen only four deaths. In response, they are calling for immediate efforts to address the situation and reduce the number of victims on the roads.

New Road Safety Strategy Aims to Cut Fatalities in Half

As part of the National Road Safety Strategy, known as Visão Zero 2030, the government aims to reduce serious road casualties by 50% by the end of the decade. Officials are currently working on proposals to introduce new measures that will contribute to this goal. One of the main initiatives includes the purchase of additional speed monitoring equipment to strengthen enforcement efforts.

Every year, and despite the progress made in the last decade, on average around 650 people lose their lives on Portuguese roads. In addition, more than 2,000 are seriously injured

New Radar Systems to Be Introduced

To improve speed control, authorities are proposing the acquisition of two new mobile radars. Additionally, a special type of radar, known as a moving law enforcement radar, is being considered. This device allows law enforcement to monitor speeding vehicles while in motion, making it easier to enforce traffic laws more effectively.

Police to Expand Traffic Surveillance Beyond Main Highways

Officials have confirmed that police will once again operate a dedicated vehicle for speed monitoring, as was previously done through an agreement with Via Litoral. This time, however, enforcement will extend beyond major highways to include other roads as well. The expansion of monitoring is expected to improve road safety by ensuring compliance with speed limits in a wider range of locations.
