Government Allocates Significant Budget for Festivities
The regional government of Madeira has set aside €511,000 for this year’s Carnival. That is about the same amount as last year for one of the island’s biggest tourism attractions. Eduardo Jesus, Secretary of Economy, Tourism, and Culture, announced the investment and predicted that hotel occupancy during the celebrations would be significantly higher than normal.
Extended Carnival Expected to Bring Large Crowds
Unlike in mainland Portugal, Madeira’s Carnival festivities last longer, beginning on Wednesday, February 26, and running until March 9. The government expects a strong turnout, with hotel bookings already reaching 88% - slightly higher than last year at this time. Jesus stated that final numbers could go up to 95% as visitors continue to make reservations.
Major Parades to Draw Thousands, As 5100 Seats are Available
The Carnival theme for 2025, “Fantasy of Colors”, will be reflected in its two biggest parades. The Carnival Allegoric Parade scheduled for Saturday, March 1, will feature 1,500 participants across 13 groups. Meanwhile, the “Trapalhão” or “Slapstick Parade”, a more informal event, will take place on Tuesday, March 4, along Funchal’s main avenues. Authorities have set up 5,100 seats for spectators along the route.
Additional Events and Attractions Planned
Beyond the main parades, the “Carnival of the Avenues” and the Carnival Market will be held daily at Avenida Arriaga in downtown Funchal. A Children’s Carnival on February 28 will include 1,100 children from local schools, and a Solidarity Carnival will take place the same day. Other themed events include costume parties, such as “Hippie Night” and “Drag Night,” along with smaller parades in different parts of the region.
