Major Advances in Telecommunications Infrastructure
Madeira is making significant steps in telecommunications, boasting one of the highest rates of optical fiber coverage in Portugal. This achievement was highlighted by Ana Figueiredo, CEO of Meo, during the MEO Empresas Techtrends 2024 conference, which focused on the future of technology in the region.
With "almost 100%" coverage of the 4G network, (…) the 5G network now reaches 85% of the resident population in the region.
Widespread 5G Connectivity Across the Archipelago
Figueiredo announced that the 5G network now covers 85% of the island's population. This expansion includes hard-to-reach areas, such as tunnels, with recent installations completed in two of the largest tunnels on the Via Rápida de Funchal. This improved connectivity is crucial for both residents and businesses alike.
A Vision for Madeira as a Digital Hub
In her address, Figueiredo expressed optimism about Madeira's potential to evolve into a digital hub. She emphasized Meo's role as a strategic partner in the region's technological development, reinforcing the importance of robust telecommunications in driving economic growth. With nearly complete 4G coverage and ongoing improvements in 5G infrastructure, Madeira is positioning itself as a key player in the digital landscape of Portugal.
