Madeira Loses Direct Flights to New York and Toronto

Madeira loses its direct flight routes to New York and Toronto as Azores Airlines seeks to enhance operational efficiency. However, direct flights could be reinstated in 2025.

Route Changes for Winter 2024

Azores Airlines will modify its direct flights between Funchal and North America, introducing a stop in the Azores, Ponta Delgada, this winter season. Starting in November 2024, flights to New York and Toronto will no longer operate as non-stop services, aligning with the airline's broader operational strategy. Passengers booking these routes will be notified of the change in their reservation systems.

New Hub Model to Improve Efficiency

The airline is adopting a hub-and-spoke system, using Ponta Delgada as a central hub. This shift is designed to optimize resources and offer passengers more connecting flight options. According to Azores Airlines, the model will streamline services and improve efficiency across its network.

Direct Flights Could Return in Summer 2025

While direct flights to New York and Toronto are paused for the winter, Azores Airlines has indicated they may return for the summer of 2025, based on demand and commercial agreements. This leaves open the possibility of restoring non-stop service during peak travel seasons.

United Airlines to Begin Funchal-Newark Flights

In 2025, United Airlines will launch a new direct service from Funchal to Newark, starting in June. This route will provide additional direct options for travelers between Madeira and the U.S.
