Madeira Parliament Approves Regional Government Program Amid Political Drama

Madeira's Parliament approved the PSD program, led by Miguel Albuquerque, after a close vote, influenced by a defiant Chega party member.

Madeira Parliament Approves PSD Program

After initial uncertainty and political maneuvering, the Madeira Parliament has approved the regional government program presented by the Social Democratic Party (PSD) executive led by Miguel Albuquerque. The vote was a close one. The program passed with 22 votes in favor, 21 against, and 4 abstentions.

Chega Party Member Defies Party Line, Casting Decisive Vote

The approval came after a Chega party member, Magna Costa, defied her party's initial stance and voted against the party line. Chega Madeira therefore accused Magna Costa of selfish and individualistic behavior. This unexpected move disrupted the anticipated opposition bloc of Chega, PS, and JPP, which could have blocked the program's passage.

Madeira's PSD-Led Government Maintains Leadership

The PSD government faced scrutiny from the Chega party for their abstention, including demands for investigations into alleged corruption and the potential resignation of Miguel Albuquerque if formally charged. The final approval of the program marks a significant political development in Madeira. The party has been leading the government for 48 years straight and continues to do so, despite unresolved corruption allegations that plagues its leadership.
