Madeira's Civil Protection plans PROCIVEX 2024 exercise on May 23 to evaluate response to a tsunami threat.

PROCIVEX 2024 Exercise On May 23

On May 23, the Madeira Regional Civil Protection Service is set to conduct an exercise to assess the emergency services' ability to respond to a tsunami and test their intervention capacity. The PROCIVEX 2024 exercise is scheduled for May 23 and revolves around a simulated scenario involving a cliff collapse on the Desertas islands, situated approximately 40 kilometers from Funchal. This event triggers a 'tsunami,' posing a significant threat to the municipalities of Funchal, Santa Cruz, Machico, and the island of Porto Santo.

Likelihood Minimal, But Preparedness-Drill Essential

"The likelihood of a tsunami occurring is minimal, but it is the responsibility of Civil Protection to anticipate such events. We have developed a specific scenario and conducted exercises to ensure our professionals are well-prepared to respond effectively," explained AntĂ³nio Nunes. He made these remarks during the ceremony marking the 42nd anniversary of the Regional Civil Protection Service in Funchal.

1930 Cabo Girao Tsunami Caused 20 Casualties

Madeira experienced a devastating & unexpected incident that occurred on March 4, 1930. Back then, parts of the Cape GirĂ£o cliff collapsed into the sea and generated a tsunami causing a wave that was about 8 meters in height. This caused 20 casualties, as people spending time at the nearby Praia Vigario did not have the opportunity to seek safety.
