Election Results and Party Performance
Yesterday’s snap election in Madeira on March 23, 2025, led to a strong victory for the Social Democratic Party (PSD), which won 43% of the vote. Despite this, the party fell just short of an absolute majority, securing 23 out of 47 seats one seat away from full control of the regional parliament. The PDS will likely again form a new coalition with José Manuel Rodrigues’ CDS-PP.
Election Results:
Social Democratic Party (PSD): 43%, 23 seats, +4 seats
Together for the People (JPP): 21%, 11 seats, +2 seats
Socialist Party (PS): 15.6%, 8 seats, -3 seats
CHEGA: 5.5%, 3 seats, -1 seats
CDS–People’s Party (CDS–PP): 3%, 2 seats, -1 seats
Liberal Initiative (IL): 2% – 1 seat
People-Animals-Nature (PAN): 1,67% – 0 seats (lost representation)
Voter Turnout Low But Sees a Slight Rise
Voter participation remains relatively low, suggesting a lack of trust in the representative parliamentary system. However, it saw a slight increase, with 56% of eligible voters casting their vote, up from 53.4% in the previous election. The higher turnout signals renewed public interest in regional politics after instability and leadership struggles.
