School From Câmara de Lobos Ranks 6th Place Out of 536 Schools
In what must be considered a significant achievement schools across Madeira have made notable contributions to the Geração Depositrão project, a national initiative aimed at recycling electronic waste and batteries. This year, the Escola Básica e Secundária Doutor Luís Maurílio da Silva Dantas in Câmara de Lobos emerged as a standout, collecting an impressive 10 tons of waste and securing a commendable 6th place nationally out of 536 participating schools.
316,000 Students Collect 435 Tons Of Waste
The Geração Depositrão project has seen substantial engagement from the island's schools. Over 316,000 students took part in this year’s effort, collectively gathering approximately 435 tons of electronic waste and batteries. The initiative not only recognizes schools for their recycling efforts but also rewards individual students and teachers who contribute significantly to the project.
Together Towards A Circular Economy
Noteworthy is the 24% increase in the collection of batteries and batteries, demonstrating heightened awareness and participation in managing hazardous waste. The Geração Depositrão project continues to drive home its message of environmental responsibility and the importance of the circular economy, with hopes for even greater involvement as the new school year begins.
All schools and affiliated entities will receive compensation for the collected waste:
For every 1000 kg of WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) collected = €50 per ton
For more than 1000 kg of WEEE collected = €80 per ton above the first ton
Regarding The Geração Depositrão Project
The Geração Depositrão project is an environmental initiative in Portugal, promoted by ERP Portugal in partnership with ABAE (Associação Bandeira Azul da Europa). This project aims to raise awareness among the school community about the proper management and recycling of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) and used batteries.
Main Objectives
Environmental Education: Encourage sustainable and responsible practices among young people.
Waste Collection: Mobilize schools to collect WEEE and batteries, promoting proper recycling.
Healthy Competition: Participating schools compete in various categories, such as the absolute weight of collected waste and weight per capita.
Incentives: Schools receive financial contributions and prizes to encourage the adoption of environmentally responsible behaviors.
