In a historic first, Madeira's tourism sector surpassed 1 million overnight stays in May 2024, according to the Regional Directorate of Statistics. The region welcomed 216,700 guests, a significant increase of 8.3% compared to the same period in 2023.

This surge in tourism activity contributed to a total of more than 4.4 million overnight stays from January to May 2024, marking a 6.4% growth compared to the previous year. Both domestic and international tourism saw positive trends.
Madeira In Line With National Trend
When compared to national data, excluding accommodations with fewer than 10 beds, Madeira's overnight stays still demonstrated a commendable 5.6% increase, in line with the national average of 7.5%. This record-breaking performance solidifies Madeira's position as a sought-after tourist destination, showcasing its appeal to both domestic and international travelers.
