AL and Rural Tourism Are Booming While Hotels Only See A Tiny Increase
In June 2024, Madeira witnessed a significant increase in its tourism sector, with 200,400 guests recorded in tourist accommodations, marking a 4.0% rise from the previous year. Overnight stays surged by 7.8%, exceeding 1.05 million - a new record. The hotel sector accounted for 70.6% of these stays, with a modest increase of 1.8%, while local accommodations and rural tourism saw substantial growths of 26.6% and 14.3%, respectively. These numbers are according to DREM.
Revenue From Tourism Outpaces National Averages
Tourism revenues in Madeira also experienced notable increases. Total revenue for June 2024 reached €69.1 million, a 15.6% year-on-year increase while lodging revenues alone grew by 16.2% to €48.8 million. These figures outpaced the national averages, which saw a 12.7% increase in both total and lodging revenues. Additionally, the average revenue per available room (RevPAR) in Madeira rose to €90.92, reflecting a 13.7% increase.
The accumulated values of guests from January to June 2024 (1.0647 million; +4.8% compared to the same period in 2023) also show growth, as do overnight stays, which approached 5.5 million (+6.6% compared to the same period in 2023).
German And Portuguese Tourists Drive Overnight Stays
The ten largest tourist markets for Madeira collectively represented 84.5% of all overnight stays in June 2024. 200,154 German tourists led the way in June, accounting for 19.1% of the total, with an 8.1% increase from the previous year. Portuguese tourists followed, comprising 16.9% of the market with a 4.4% rise. However, the UK market, despite being the second-largest, saw a 2.3% decline in overnight stays.

Golf And Cruise Sectors Show Positive Trends
DREM further reports that the first half of 2024 saw the number of rounds played at Madeira's golf courses increase by 9.0% year-on-year, totaling 43,480 rounds and generating approximately €2.3 million in revenue. Meanwhile, the cruise ship sector also showed growth, with 337,431 passengers visiting Madeira, a 2.8% increase, despite a 10.3% decrease in the number of cruise ship calls to the region's ports.
