Online Poll Shows, Madeirans Don’t Want Change In Leadership
A recent online poll held on the website of Diário de NotÃcias da Madeira raised the question: Who will you vote for in the regional elections on May 26 (Em quem vai votar nas Regionais de 26 de Maio)? The results show that about 36% (4600 votes) of those taking part in the poll will vote for PSD in the upcoming regional government elections. The poll is still ongoing and more than 10000 votes have been registered so far.
PSD Leaders At The Center Of The Corruption Investigation
Both Funchal’s ex-mayor Pedro Calado and the current president of the regional government Miguel Albuquerque are at the center of the investigations regarding the corruption scandal that unfolded in January and which is still ongoing. The allegations against the president, who benefits from political immunity as a defendant, are numerous. They range from accusations of active and passive corruption to embezzlement and abuse of office, among others.
Why Does Madeira Not Want A Different Government?
The poll prompts important questions, as it leaves objective observers of Madeiran politics in disbelief: why do Madeirans continue to support a party that can not get its hands clean and is embroiled in allegations that could not be more serious? A party that is even under heavy critique from its own members, see Manuel António Correia who calls the PSD a sick party (partido doente).
With even harsher words, Manuel António Correia considers that his party "has only survived through successive, disconnected and incoherent alliances", in which, he stressed, "one sells one's soul and auctions off public places to survive, including the highest position of Autonomy".
On a more abstract scale, seeing that democracy is a dynamic process that depends on political change for its evolution and functioning, but also regarding the corruption allegations surfacing in 2024: Why is there no apparent lack of desire for leadership change, especially considering PSD's longstanding presence in government and the consistent election of PSD-affiliated presidents since 1976?
