Man Confesses to Wife’s Murder, Claiming Mental Instability
A 52-year-old man confessed in court to murdering his wife last Wednesday in Machico but claimed to have no clear motive. His lawyer, Américo Silva Dias, stated that the man expressed confusion, saying he “doesn’t know what came over him.” The defense highlighted his apparent mental instability, noting he attempted suicide by ingesting over 20 pills shortly after the attack.
Full Psychiatric Evaluation Requested
Silva Dias emphasized that his client’s actions were out of character, given his lack of a prior criminal record. The accused used an iron bar in the assault. The defense plans to request a full psychiatric evaluation to determine if the suspect should serve time in prison or a psychiatric institution.
Suspect Facing Extradition to Argentina or Venezuela
The suspect, who has dual nationality, may face extradition to Argentina or Venezuela. Born in Argentina, he moved to Venezuela at age four and relocated to Madeira seven years ago with his wife. They have a 14-year-old daughter, whom he may now be prohibited from seeing.
The initial court hearing concluded with the imposition of preventive detention while the investigation continues.
