Large Number of Portuguese Man O’ War Found on Prainha Beach
A large number of Portuguese man o’ war, a sea creature known for its painful sting, were found on the shore of Prainha Beach in the Caniçal area. The incident, which came to public attention through a post on Reddit and reported by Diário de Notícias da Madeira, is the most significant sighting of these creatures on land in recent weeks.
Although isolated sightings of the Portuguese man o’ war have occurred along the coast of Madeira recently, this is highly unusual for so many to be washed up in one place. The discovery has raised concern among locals and beachgoers, as the creature's sting can be dangerous to humans.
Dangerous to Touch Even After Death, With Tentacles up to 30 Meters
The Portuguese man o’ war is not a jellyfish, though it looks similar. It is a colony of tiny organisms that live together as one unit. Its tentacles can reach up to 30 meters in length and carry venom similar to that of a black widow spider. Contact with its tentacles can cause severe pain, burns, and in some cases, lasting scars. Even dead ones on the sand can still sting. The species does not swim. Instead, it floats on the surface, moved by wind and ocean currents. Its gas-filled bladder, which can rise up to 15 centimeters above the water, is usually blue, purple, or pink.
Pain level: Very high
Danger: Not deadly. Can cause intense burning pain, welts on the skin, and in rare cases, breathing problems or shock.
Venom: Similar in effect to a black widow spider
Changes in Weather and Currents May Be the Cause
Marine specialists say that stronger winds and changes in ocean currents may be bringing more Portuguese man o’ war closer to the coast. The regional government has not yet made an official statement.
Public Awareness and Safety Measures
Swimmers and beach visitors are being advised to stay away from any of these creatures they see on land or in the water. Wearing shoes while walking on the beach can be a safety measure and keeping children and pets away from anything that looks like a man o’ war. If someone is stung, they should rinse the area with seawater, not fresh water, and seek medical help as soon as possible.
