Miguel Albuquerque Does Not Cease To Deliver
After the release of the three suspects from a Lisbon prison, it has become awfully silent around the investigation of the so-called mega operation. However, Miguel Albuquerque, president of the regional government, who refuses to resign despite being under investigation, continues to make yet another headline.
Money Laundering or Concealment of Illicit Benefits?
In what has been reported by Correio da Manhã, Miguel Albuquerque’s Partner, Sofia Fernandes, is claimed to have transferred 170.000 euros only three days after the mega operation took place. The bank, according to law, is said to have reported this transfer under terms of prevention of money laundering. Judicial authorities investigated accordingly and decided to freeze the money transfer.
“The attempt by the partner of the ceasing president of the regional government, and leader of PSD Madeira, to move such an elevated sum at a moment so close to the PJ searches reinforced suspicions that Miguel Albuquerque could have been using people close to him to hide illicit benefits while he was a politician in Madeira”
Correio da Manhã Investigates Further
Further reports that Albuquerque's daughter - who apparently lives in Sweden for the last thirty years - has been receiving more than 1400 euros each month and throughout the last five years from local businessman Tony Saramago, who founded the Atalaia Living Care, an IPSS which receives millions of euros from the regional government.
Speaking to CM, Saramago confirmed the payment to Miguel Albuquerque's daughter, of whom he is a close friend, and justified the payment with the work of consulting and prospecting the Swedish market for elderly people interested in being admitted to Atalaia Living Care. (…) When questioned about the situation, the presidency of the regional government said that "it was a private company and, as such, there was no comment to be made". According to sources familiar with the case, Sara has never been to the IPSS premises, she is not known to have worked for the IPSS, and no Swedish elderly person has ever been hospitalised there.
Miguel Albuquerque Denies Everything
In the meantime, Miguel Albuquerque has reached out to the public regarding the suspicious transfer of his wife. He basically refuted all claims, saying that everything is a lie.
“This is all a lie, it does not correspond to the truth (…) What is there does not correspond to the truth. We don't have any blocked accounts, nor did my wife try to move any money. That’s all fantasy.”
