More Cows & Less Farmers in Madeira
In 2023, Madeira counted 17,600 cows on agricultural farms, representing a slight overall increase of 1.8% compared to 2019. The family farming population, which includes the farmer and their household, decreased by 2,399 individuals (a 6.5% drop) to 34,532 people in 2023. However, the Utilized Agricultural Area increased by 2,1%.
Regarding the future of their agricultural operations, 98.0% of individual producers in Madeira stated they would continue their farming activities. The primary reasons for this commitment are the additional income that farming provides for their families (55.9%) and the emotional attachment to their farms (27.5%).
It’s Mostly Men and They are Getting Older
Of all producers, There werde 12,008 individual producers, who account for 98.4% of the region's farms. The majority of Madeira's farmers are men (55.9%) with an average age of 64, which is two years older than in 2019.
Madeira Has More Educated Farmers
Between 2019 and 2023, educational levels slightly improved. The percentage of producers with:
basic education rose from 69.8% to 71.5%,
those with higher education increased from 7% to 8.4%,
while the percentage of those with no education decreased from 14.1% to 10.9%.
