Mosquito Threat: Madeira Empowers Residents

Madeira combats the Aedes Aegypti mosquito with informative sessions led by entomologist Ysabel Gonçalves, empowering residents in eliminating breeding grounds.

Funchal Takes Proactive Measures Against Aedes Aegypti Mosquito

The Municipality of Funchal (CMF) has initiated a series of awareness actions regarding the Aedes aegypti mosquito, as part of its municipal strategy to combat this mosquito. The mosquito has been present in Funchal since 2005. These initiatives, led by Ysabel Gonçalves, an entomologist from the Museum of Natural History of Funchal, are taking place across the 10 parishes of the municipality.

Empowering Residents Through Mosquito Awareness Sessions

Ysabel Gonçalves conducts informative sessions lasting approximately 45 minutes, followed by discussions, addressing the residents in general. The sessions cover essential information about the mosquito, including its biology, distribution, preventive measures, and combat strategies. The goal is to empower the residents with knowledge to adopt good practices for reducing and, if possible, eliminating mosquito breeding grounds.

Global Aedes aegypti distribution

According to Councilor Nádia Coelho, the primary goal is to improve the reduction and possible elimination of mosquito breeding grounds. The focus is also on providing information about self-protection measures. The mosquito serves as a vector for viral diseases such as Dengue and Yellow Fever and is prevalent in the municipality, especially below 250 meters in altitude. Common breeding grounds in domestic environments include plant saucers and other small containers that hold or accumulate water.

Mosquitoes Are Relatively Inactive in Early Spring

At this time of the year, the mosquito is at the lowest point in its activity cycle. Therefore, it is crucial for all residents to actively engage in combating it by eliminating all potential breeding grounds. The involvement of the community is essential in this collective effort to address the mosquito issue in Funchal.

What You Can Do To Fight Mosquitoes

Mosquitoes can breed in only 30–60 ml of water. Clear out any areas where rainwater can assemble. Empty, drain, or cover containers like trash cans or barrels. Repair broken or old outdoor leaks. Focus on plumbing, air conditioners, and faucets. Maintain swimming pools properly.

Do also ensure rain gutters and drains remain free of debris and blockages. Attract birds or dragonflies to your yard or balcony. They are natural predators and feed on mosquitoes. It will help control their population.

What You Can Do Prevent Being Bitten By Mosquitoes

Opt for light-colored clothing to make yourself less noticeable to mosquitoes and avoid Peak Mosquito Hours: Be mindful of their activity hours, which take place particularly around dawn and dusk. Mosquitoes are attracted by your scent, which is also why some humans are more susceptible to mosquito bites. Protect your feet and ankles, and wear long socks that mosquitoes can not permeate.
