Court Asks to Lift Immunity of Eduardo Jesus
On November 5, 2024, the Funchal District Court requested the Madeira Legislative Assembly (ALM) to remove the immunity of Eduardo Jesus, the Secretary of Economy, Tourism, and Culture. This move is to allow for an investigation into allegations that he may have committed misconduct in his role.
Allegations Involve Administrative Decisions
The investigation is based on claims related to decisions made within Jesus' department. Reports suggest that these allegations do not involve corruption or serious criminal activities, which distinguishes this case from ongoing investigations into other regional government members, such as Miguel Albuquerque and Pedro Ramos.
If there is the slightest doubt about my actions in my role, I wish for the opportunity to respond quickly because I have always acted in good faith, defending the public interest. I consider it essential to remove any suspicion arising from the complaints frequently made against my behavior and that of my team.

Eduardo Jesus Responds to the Claims
Eduardo Jesus spoke to the press, expressing surprise at the court's request, as he has not received any official notification about the investigation. He noted that anonymous complaints have become common but stressed the need for transparency. “If there are doubts about my actions, I want to clarify them,” he said, emphasizing that he has always acted in the public's best interest.
I am not bothered at all; I have nothing to fear, and that is what is important. It is my conscience that allows me to sleep well, not whether I am accused or not. In the system we live in, some people live for years in that condition. We all know many who are accused, and that means nothing more than that. They have not been, nor are they, diminished by that. This status does not represent any conviction and can allow for the understanding of the process in question, and it is in this context that I will be able to defend myself

President Albuquerque Defends Eduardo Jesus
As the situation unfolds, the Assembly will need to decide on the request to lift Jesus’ immunity, which could help clarify the allegations against him. In th meantime, President Albuquerque has commented on the judicial investigation. He criticized the what he called "anonymous complaints" as attempts to create public alarm and weaken the government, noting that the investigation concerns "administrative matters." Albuquerque asserted that the process does not harm the Regional Government and stated that Eduardo Jesus has "committed no crime" and will cooperate with the judicial process.
