Partido Socialista (PS) Wants New Passenger Ferry For Madeira

A passenger ferry service connecting Madeira to mainland Portugal has been attempted twice, but the demand for its return persists.

PS: Ferry Connecting The Mainland To Operate Twice Weekly

Madeira's Partido Socialista (PS) submitted a proposal to the regional parliament to relaunch the ferry connection between Madeira and mainland Portugal. The connection would operate weekly for an initial five years, with a possible extension to ten years. This proposal aims to boost the regional economy, improve mobility, and offer competitive prices for transporting goods.

Ferry Existed Previously But Was Not Profitable

This service had been operational twice in the past, from 2008 to 2012 and again from 2018 to 2019 but was eventually discontinued due to unprofitability. The losses were attributed to low demand, with only 1 in 25 people traveling to the mainland choosing the ferry.

Will the ferry one day reconnect Madeira with the mainland?

Ferry Likely To Boost Economy

The PS argues that this ferry connection is crucial for boosting the regional economy, improving mobility for residents, and providing more competitive prices for transporting goods. They also criticize the regional government for not taking action sooner on this issue, which has been a demand of Madeirans since 2019.

It is not understandable how the Regional Government pushes this decision of such importance to our companies and our citizens to the Republic, which in fact has been a demand of Madeirans and Porto-Santenses since 2019, the date on which Empresa de Navegação Madeiran stopped carrying out this maritime connection activity between the region and the continent

The proposal calls for dialogue with the national government to ensure the operational and logistical conditions for the ferry connection's viability.
