Unusual Appearance, As Aurora Borealis Is Seen In Madeira
Last night, Portugal and Madeira got a rare glimpse of the northern lights, which usually aren't seen so far south. This light show was caused by a giant solar storm. It’s the sun threw a tantrum and flung a bunch of charged particles our way. These particles interacted with the earth's magnetic field, that’s why it’s also called a geomagnetic storm, and that interaction made the colorful lights dance in the sky at much lower latitudes than usual. It was a bit like a light show escaping its usual spot way up north!
