Organic Bananas Available In Madeira Starting Tomorrow
GESBA is set to introduce organic bananas to the regional market starting tomorrow, May 21st. This initiative will begin at the Continente Monumental EdifĂcio SĂŁo Lucas Store in Funchal. This marks a significant milestone as Sonae becomes the first retail chain in the region to offer organic bananas, as reported by Diário de NotĂcias da Madeira.
More Stores Will Offer Organic Bananas Throughout The Week
Throughout the week, the availability of these organic bananas will expand to other Continente stores across the region. The introduction of organic bananas reflects a growing consumer demand for organic produce and a commitment to sustainable agriculture.
What Are Organic Bananas?
Organic bananas are bananas that are grown according to the standards of organic agriculture. This means that they are grown without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or fertilizers. Organic farmers also use practices that help to conserve soil and water resources.
Bananas are a great example of a climate-friendly food.
The carbon footprint of bananas:
80g CO2e each
480g CO2e per kilo
Are Organic Bananas More Nutritious?
There is some debate about whether organic bananas are more nutritious than conventional bananas. Some studies have shown that organic bananas may have higher levels of certain antioxidants, but the research is not conclusive.
Are Organic Bananas Also Fairtrade?
No, not necessarily. Organic and Fairtrade are two separate certifications.
Organic means the bananas were grown without synthetic pesticides or fertilizers
Fairtrade means the farmers who grew the bananas were paid a fair price and workers had good working conditions.
However, for obvious reasons, some brands sell bananas that are both organic and Fairtrade Certified Bananas.
