Air Traffic Increases by Almost 9% in January

In January 2025, Madeira and Porto Santo airports saw an 8.9% rise in passenger traffic, totaling 340,900 travelers. International travel grew significantly by 16.9%, while domestic traffic remained stable.

Nearly 9% More Passengers Compared to Last Year

In January 2025, both regional airports in Madeira and Porto Santo together recorded an 8.9% increase in passenger traffic compared to the same month in 2024. The data, provided by DREM, highlights a total of 340,900 passengers transported on 2,582 flights, an increase of 10.6% in aircraft movements.

Madeira Airport Sees Growth, Porto Santo Experiences Slight Decline

The figures show that Madeira Airport handled 330,000 passengers, a rise of 9.3% from January 2024, along with an 11.5% increase in aircraft movements, totaling 2,417 flights. In contrast, Porto Santo Airport saw a slight drop, with aircraft movements decreasing by 1.2% to 165 flights, and passenger numbers falling by 0.5% to 10,800 travelers.

On average, each flight carried approximately 137 passengers at Madeira Airport, while at Porto Santo Airport, the average was 66 passengers per flight.

International Travel Grows 16.9% While Domestic Traffic Remains Stable

International travel saw an increase of 16.9%, with 190,300 passengers recorded, while domestic traffic remained relatively stable, growing by 0.3% to 150,600 passengers. At Madeira Airport, international travel made up 56.8% of total traffic, whereas at Porto Santo Airport, domestic travel was more dominant, accounting for 75.5% of total passengers, a slight change from 76.3% in January 2024.

Flight Occupancy Rates and Key Destinations

Regular flights accounted for 90.4% of all aircraft movements and 92.3% of passenger traffic. The average occupancy rate for flights at Madeira and Porto Santo airports was 77.9%, slightly lower than January 2024's 79.1% overall. Madeira Airport maintained a 78.0% occupancy rate, while Porto Santo had 75.0%.
