Pico Do Arieiro bans rental cars, prompting debate. PAN proposes a QR-code based booking app to manage tourist influx and diversify tourism.

Rental Cars Banned From Pico Do Arieiro

The issue of traffic congestion at Pico do Arieiro demands a solution, and it has been decided that rental cars will no longer be permitted to access the radar area at the summit. Instead, they will be required to park at a more distant parking lot, which is a 10-minute walk away. Residents and taxis are not banned and will still have access to the radar area at the summit.

PAN Questions Rental Car Ban, Suggests More Elaborate Solution

What seems like a genuine and necessary regulation of one of Madeira’s most appreciated tourist attractions has been called into question by the Party for Animals and Nature (PAN). They raise concern about recent restrictions on car rentals to Pico do Arieiro, saying they just cover up the problem. PAN Madeira suggests using a digital platform for booking visits in advance. This would help control the number of visitors and make sure everyone stays safe.

Access Through QR-Code & Tourist Site Advertising

The party suggests introducing an app and website for booking visits to tourist sites. People would book in advance and be provided a QR code to show that they're allowed to visit. In cases the visitor wants to book a timeslot that is fully booked, the government could suggest other places to go, making tourism more varied and being able to highlight and introduce areas of interest. PAN also suggests how the App can be financed: through funds from the PRR and the Environmental Fund.
