Police Increase Speeding Inspections to Cut Accidents

Speeding in Madeira? You might want to take your foot off the gas - not just because the police currently have their eyes and radars on you.

Authorities Concerned About High-Speed-Related Accidents

The Public Security Police (PSP) remains concerned about speeding on the roads. Recent data shows that about one-third of accidents are linked to excessive speed. The police has highlighted the ongoing lack of respect from many drivers regarding speed limits, which continues to put lives at risk.

Thousands of Vehicles Monitored During Recent Campaign

As part of the "Viajar Sem Pressa" (Travel without rush) campaign, PSP officers monitored over 10,000 vehicles for speed violations. Throughout the initiative, nearly 10,947 vehicles underwent speed checks, leading to the detection of numerous infractions. The campaign, conducted in various regions, was one of many planned for this year to improve road safety.

Hundreds of Fines Issued for Speeding Violations

During on-the-ground inspections, regional police stopped about 1,503 vehicles. Among them, officers recorded 263 violations, 99 of which were related to excessive speed. These included 70 minor speeding offenses, 26 classified as serious, and three considered very serious. The police stress that increasing speed by even a small amount can significantly reduce reaction time, making it harder to stop in emergencies.

PSP Plans Further Road Safety Campaigns in 2024

The "Viajar Sem Pressa" campaign was the third of eleven nationwide initiatives scheduled for this year. These operations target key factors in road accidents, including speed, alcohol consumption, the use of safety accessories, mobile phone use while driving, and motorized two-wheel vehicles. The PSP aims to reinforce awareness and encourage safer driving habits through these focused campaigns, running throughout 2024.
