A 41-year-old prisoner at Funchal Prison, where he is currently serving a sentence of only a few months, has been on a hunger strike for 13 days. He is sustaining himself with only water and medication. The prison confirmed the incident, saying he is on a hunger strike for 10 days.
Rosario Freitas, the mother of the inmate, has lodged a complaint. The son began his protest after being placed in isolation following a visit from his mother and a cousin.
Mother Defends Son Against Claims
I told them I wanted to speak to the boss. There's no way you can talk to the warden. But with the boss, look, I'll talk to him.
Authorities allege that drugs were delivered during the visit, a claim vehemently denied by the mother, who insists that this is untrue. She is afraid her son will die in prison.
Rosario Freitas has already contacted the prison but says that so far she hasn't received any information. Claiming her son is in bad shape and turning yellow, she now wants to talk to the person in charge of the prison.
