PS Pushes for Transparency as Opposition Blocks Audit Proposal
Paulo Cafôfo, leader of PS-Madeira, sharply criticized opposition parties PSD, CDS, and Chega for blocking a proposal to audit the financial activities of the Madeira government, led by Miguel Albuquerque. The proposal, backed by the Socialist Party (PS), aimed to have the Tribunal de Contas (Court of Auditors) review the government’s spending and contract practices. Cafôfo expressed frustration, questioning how parties that claim to support transparency could block a measure designed to improve government oversight.
Proposed Audit Focused on Contracts and Public-Private Partnerships
The PS proposal called for an audit of specific contracts and financial agreements made under Albuquerque’s administration. These included contracts worth less than €950,000, public-private partnerships, and agreements with various regional institutions. PS also wanted audits on major public works over €750,000 and the finances of public agencies like the Madeira Health Service and housing investments in the region.
Cafôfo Accuses Chega of Backtracking on Prior Support
Cafôfo singled out Chega, accusing the party of inconsistency. Although Chega had previously proposed a similar audit, they later withdrew their proposal and abstained from voting on the PS-backed measure. Cafôfo criticized this move, calling it “zigzagging” and suggesting that Chega was now siding with PSD and CDS to protect the current government from further scrutiny.
PS Stands Firm in Opposition to Albuquerque’s Government
PS-Madeira also dismissed suggestions that it would support Miguel Albuquerque’s government to keep it stable. Cafôfo argued that Chega’s recent no-confidence motion was an attempt to pressure PS into an alliance. “Chega thought they could pressure us into supporting the government, but that backfired,” he said, emphasizing that PS would continue pushing for accountability and transparency.
