PSD Wins Elections, These Are The Coalition Scenarios

PSD leads but short of majority. PS eyes coalition, JPP's rise notable. Right steady, left absent. Coalition scenarios unfold.

How Will The New Government Coalition Look Like

In the recent elections, the PSD emerged as the leading party with the highest number of votes with 36.1% (19 seats). However, they fell short of achieving an absolute majority by just five deputies. Despite this, PSD leader Miguel Albuquerque has assured the public that he will present a stable Executive, aiming to govern effectively with the mandate received.

PS Still Holding Up Claims To Government

The PS, holding 11 seats (21.3%), remains hopeful for an alternative coalition or arrangement that could challenge PSD's dominance. Their ambition signals a readiness to explore potential alliances to influence the legislative agenda.

JPP Gains 4 Seats

A significant development in this election was the performance of JPP, which almost doubled its mandates (9 seats or 16.9%). The JPP claims that it will not anticipate who it will be going into a coalition with.

Far Right Does Not Gain More Seats

Meanwhile, Chega did not see an increase in their number of seats but managed to retain their existing seats. Similarly, PAN and IL have maintained their representation without any change in the number of deputies.

Leftist Parties Fail To Secure Seats, 3 More Parties Part Of The Assembly

In contrast, both CDU and BE failed to secure any seats in the Assembly, marking their absence from the legislative body for this term. CDS-PP (2 seats), IL (1 seat) and PAN (1 seat) are part of the new assembly.

Possible Coalitions To Form A Majority

From the total of 47 seats, a majority government must claim 24 seats. The possible coalitions to form a majority government are

  • PSD + PS = 30 seats

  • PSD + JPP = 28 seats

  • PSD + Chega + CDS-PP = 25 seats

  • PSD + Chega + IL = 24 seats

  • PS + JPP + Chega = 24 seats

  • PS + JPP + CDS-PP + IL + PAN = 24 seats

As the political parties navigate the post-election landscape, the PSD's challenge will be to form a stable government without an absolute majority, while other parties like PS and JPP may play crucial roles in shaping the future legislative and political strategies.
