PSD Set to Win 23 Seats, Nearing Absolute Majority
The Madeiran people have spoken: Political projections of today’s regional elections suggest that the Social Democratic Party (PSD) led by the current president Miguel Albuquerque is once again aiming at a commanding victory. With estimates pointing to 23 seats for the PSD (up from 19 seats), the party is not far from securing an absolute majority. This result represents a significant increase, gaining five seats compared to the 2024 elections held in May of last year.
JPP Continues Steady Growth
The People's Party for the Region (JPP) is also on the rise, maintaining a steady upward trend. The party is forecast to secure 11 seats, up from 9 in the previous election. JPP's consistent growth reflects its continued appeal to voters, even as other parties face shifts in their support base.
PS Faces Decline, Losing Seats
On the other hand, the Socialist Party (PS) is projected to see a reduction in its parliamentary presence. The PS could lose three seats compared to last year's results, bringing their total down to just eight. This decline marks a significant shift in the political landscape, particularly as the PSD strengthens its hold on the region.
Smaller Parties Struggle for Representation
Meanwhile, smaller parties are facing difficult outcomes in these projections. Chega, once seen as a rising force, is expected to be reduced to just three seats (down from 4). Both the CDS and IL are projected to win only a single seat each. The PAN, which had previously managed to secure a position in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (ALRAM), is forecast to fall short of the threshold, possibly leaving the regional parliament.
