Immunity Meant To Protect, Not To Evade Accountability
In the upcoming Regional elections on May 26th, Raquel Coelho, the leading candidate for the PTP, pledges to seek the removal of Miguel Albuquerque's double immunity, if elected. The Portuguese Labor Party emphasizes that parliamentary immunity is meant to protect deputies from coercion or persecution for their political stances, not to evade accountability in corruption cases.
Albuquerque Hides Behind Political Immunity
Coelho criticizes the Social Democrats for frequently resorting to parliamentary immunity to evade legal repercussions, labeling it as political dishonesty. Coelho asserts that the PSD never relinquishes immunity when caught engaging in wrongdoing. Miguel Albuquerque is profiting of political immunity both as the president of the Madeiran Government and additionally for being a state councilor.
When they are caught red-handed, they never raise their immunity.
