Public Transport in Funchal Hit by Strike Tomorrow

Bus drivers and public transport workers will strike tomorrow. Plan ahead, as this will likely impact your travel and cause delays.

Public Transport Operator Warns of Delays

Horários do Funchal (HF) has announced that its services will be disrupted on Thursday, February 20 due to a strike called by the Sindicato Nacional de Motoristas e Outros Trabalhadores (SNMOT). The strike will last the entire day. In a public statement, HF expressed regret over the inconvenience and assured passengers that efforts would be made to reduce the impact as much as possible. Union Plans Additional Strike in March

The SNMOT has not only scheduled the February 20 strike but has also planned another 24-hour stoppage on March 13. The strikes involve workers from both public and private passenger transport services in Madeira. Just like in the case of the strike of the hotel workers, protesters have announced they will march to Quinta Vigia, seeking a response from the regional government.

Reasons Behind the Strike

The union is demanding better wages, improved working conditions, and greater job security for transport workers. They argue that current conditions do not reflect the responsibilities and challenges faced by drivers and other employees in the sector.

The SNMOT regrets that the Regional Government of Madeira has resigned from its responsibilities as if it had already lost or given up on the elections. Even if that were the case, the Regional Government of Madeira would still have to honor the commitment it made to its voters in particular and to the people of Madeira in general until the very last minute of its mandate.

Passengers Advised to Plan Ahead

With bus services set to be disrupted, passengers are encouraged to plan their trips in advance. HF has not provided details on any alternative transport options, so travelers may need to consider other means of transportation on the affected days.
