From Waste to Wow: Madeira's Reverse Vending Success

Each year, more bottles are getting recycled, showcasing the success of Madeira's reverse vending effort.

Reverse Vending Machines Are Becoming More Popular Every Year

JM-Madeira reports that the Cervejas da Madeira (ECM) is making a positive impact with 13 reverse vending machines in the region. In 2023, these machines collected 1,673,445 glass bottles, a 30% increase from the previous year and 36% from 2021. A survey of 300 beer consumers revealed that 94% are aware of the bottle reuse and deposit value recovery system, with an average return value of 1.49€ per consumer. The initiative not only saves natural resources but also reduces energy for new bottle production and cuts carbon emissions.

Beyond Bottle Collection, Towards a Sustainable Future

Beyond the environmental benefits, the collection helps clean the local environment and prevents bottles from becoming polluting waste. This aligns with ECM's mission of waste reduction and material reuse, engaging customers and the community and strengthening the brand as an environmentally responsible company. The practice showcases sustainable approaches with environmental, economic, and social benefits, highlighting ECM's commitment to a more sustainable future.
