Russian Foreign Ministry Warns of "Retaliatory Measures"
In a warning to Portugal and other European Union countries, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced today that there will be "retaliatory measures" in response to the delivery of military equipment, including Kamov helicopters, to Ukraine. The statement, made by Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova, was delivered during a video conference. The shipment of the helicopters took place two years after Lisbon announced its intention to deliver the Russian-origin platforms to Ukraine.
Portugal Accused of Following U.S. Lead
Zakharova accused Portugal and other EU nations of blindly following the trajectory set by Washington. She described the delivery of Portuguese Kamov Ka-32A11B helicopters to Ukraine as a "hostile act" against Russia. The helicopters are intended to support Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia, which began in February 2022 following Russia's invasion.
Zakharova One Of Putin’s Worst Pundits
Days before the (2022 Ukraine) invasion, Zakharova declared in a BBC interview that Russia’s reputation as an aggressor was “invented” by the West, and Russia “had not invaded the territory of Ukraine,” despite Russia’s 2014 invasion and occupation of Crimea and attempted seizure of eastern Ukraine. Aiming to discredit and mock media reports that exposed the Kremlin’s preparations for a massive military offensive in early February, Zakharova asked the U.S. and UK media to share the schedule of the planned further invasion so she could “plan my vacation.”
Dubious Retaliation Plans Allegedly to Be Kept Confidential
The spokesperson hinted that Russia’s response would be kept under wraps until it is implemented. “These actions will not be forgotten when defining our bilateral relations. As everyone knows, we have a good memory, although we are not vindictive,” Zakharova said when asked by the Portuguese news agency Lusa about the six helicopters sent by Portugal.
Russia Condemns Western Support for Ukraine
Zakharova went on to criticize the Kyiv government and its Western allies for contemplating the use of long-range missiles that could reach deep into Russian territory. In what can only be described as yet another schizophrenic Russian outburst, she accused the Ukrainian military of committing “monstrous crimes against peaceful civilians” () in Russian-occupied regions, comparing their actions to the methods used by fascists during World War II. She also warned of potential threats from Ukraine to the Kursk nuclear power plant.
