Rising Costs for Essential School Materials
The Partido da Terra (MPT) has expressed alarm over the increasing financial strain faced by families in Madeira for school supplies. Although textbooks are provided by the Regional Government, other essential materials present a significant expense.
Example of High Costs for First-Year Students
MPT highlighted a case from Achada Primary School, where a parent paid €161.80 for essential supplies for a first-year student. The party notes that such costs are burdensome for many families, exacerbated by stagnant wages and rising inflation.
We propose that a more robust support mechanism be created, such as subsidies or vouchers with values adjusted to the real needs of families, which will help to mitigate the economic impact of these expenses, ensuring that all children have access to essential resources to start the school year under equal conditions
Criticism of Insufficient Municipal Support
Municipal Deputy Valter Rodrigues (MPT) criticized the Funchal City Council for providing only €30 in vouchers for school supplies, calling it inadequate. Rodrigues pointed out that substantial funds are directed toward events like rallies, while essential educational needs are not adequately addressed.
Call for Enhanced Support Measures
The MPT is urging for a reevaluation of support policies for school supplies. They propose implementing more substantial aid mechanisms, such as increased subsidies or vouchers, to better address the needs of families and ensure equal access to education for all children.
