Today, a defendant from Madeira was sentenced to six years in prison in Funchal. His offense: attempting to smuggle approximately 22 kilos of drugs into the region last summer.

The person on trial, a 46-year-old, got in trouble for supposedly snagging about 21 kilos of hashish and 100 grams of cocaine in Lisbon. The sneaky part? They stashed the drugs in the lining of an Audi A3's passenger compartment, shipping it off to Madeira by sea.

What happened before

On July 13, 2022, the Judiciary Police arrested the convict at the Caniçal port while he was preparing to retrieve the vehicle. He's been behind bars, waiting for his trial to kick off in Madeira.

In the courtroom, the person in question admitted to a few details but stuck to their story that they were just playing the role of a courier for the drugs. Still, the team of judges wasn't buying it.

They decided the guy was, in fact, the true owner of the narcotics. The verdict? He had plans to offload the drugs in Madeira to sort out his money issues.

On top of the time behind bars, the court also ruled that the Audi A3, the ride used for hauling the drugs, would be seized and handed over to the State.
