Madeira's New Public Transport Network SIGA Off To A Promising Start

SIGA, the new public transportation network in Madeira successfully started operations on Madeira day!

Positive Feedback on Day One

According to Jornal da Madeira, the Regional Secretary for Equipment and Infrastructure, Pedro Fino, has expressed great satisfaction with the initial reception of Madeira's revamped public transportation system, SIGA. Fino noted that a significant number of residents embraced the government's invitation to experience the new buses, finding them to be comfortable and well-equipped. The positive feedback aligns with the government's ongoing strategy to incentivize public transport usage, which includes free fares introduced in January for students and the elderly as well as on Madeira day for everyone. This initiative has already proven effective, leading to a notable increase in ridership.

Many people accepted the invitation of the Government and experienced public transport, having considered the buses comfortable

Three Operators, 127 New Buses

SIGA is managed by three operators: Companhia de Buses da Madeira (CAM), Siga Rodoeste, and Funchal Timetable. A fleet of 127 new, modern, and environmentally friendly buses has been introduced, although some older models will continue to operate for a transitional period.

Focus on Continued Improvement

The positive start bodes well for the future of public transportation in Madeira. The regional government remains committed to its plan to further encourage public transport adoption through ongoing improvements and initiatives.
