New Campaign Aims to Control Stray Animal Population in Madeira

The Association of Municipalities of the Autonomous Region of Madeira (AMRAM) has launched its sixth campaign to sterilize, vaccinate, and register stray and abandoned animals across all municipalities in the region. The campaign, which started in September 2024, is set to continue until December 2025. The initiative includes sterilization, anti-rabies vaccination, and the registration of animals in the Pet Information System (SIAC), along with electronic identification.

Over 2,000 Animals Targeted for Sterilization, Within 16 Months

AMRAM’s latest effort aims to sterilize 2,159 stray animals within the next 16 months. This ambitious goal reflects the Association's ongoing commitment to managing the stray animal population in the region. The campaign is part of a broader strategy that has already seen over 15,000 animals sterilized under previous initiatives. AMRAM's total investment in these efforts now exceeds 1.1 million euros, with the current campaign alone accounting for 170,000 euros.

Legislative Mandates Drive Sterilization Efforts

The ongoing sterilization services are not only a response to the growing stray animal population but also a measure to support local municipalities in complying with Regional Legislative Decree No. 13/2016/M. This legislation, enacted in March 2016, outlines specific obligations for municipalities regarding the control and care of stray animals. AMRAM’s campaign aims to alleviate some of the burdens on local authorities by providing crucial resources and services.
