The Portuguese National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) started sending text messages to citizens late this afternoon. The messages explain that the return of electricity across mainland Portugal is happening little by little, asking citizens to remain calm as everything will be getting back to normal.

Electricity is returning gradually. With everyone’s calm, we will guarantee essential services and return to normal in the next few hours.

National Coordination Center Meets to Manage Crisis

Since 1:30 p.m., the National Coordination Center, which includes several emergency and rescue organizations, has been meeting at ANEPC's headquarters. The group is discussing how to handle the situation and apply necessary measures after a massive power outage struck Portugal. The Secretary of State for Civil Protection is leading the meeting.

Large-Scale Power Cut Affects Iberian Peninsula

REN – Redes Energéticas Nacionais, the company responsible for managing the national electricity network, confirmed a widespread power cut across the entire Iberian Peninsula earlier today. REN also said that energy restoration plans are in place and being applied step by step. The blackout began at 11:30 a.m and was still affecting large parts of the country by 8:30 p.m. Authorities are working to bring services back to normal, but progress is careful to avoid new problems.
