A recent survey by Jornal da Madeira reveals that a significant number of Madeira residents are feeling increasingly uneasy about safety on the island. According to the survey, 53.6% of respondents believe that there are more visible signs of insecurity on the streets, pointing to a growing concern among locals about public safety.

The number of reported crimes in Madeira soared to a nine-year high in 2023, mirroring trends seen across the mainland.

Residents Call for Stronger Police Presence

While a majority agree that insecurity seems to be rising, about 30.5% stressed the need for more community-focused policing. This group believes that a stronger neighborhood police presence could address local concerns, helping residents feel safer and deterring potential crime. The sentiment among these respondents is clear: more visible, proactive policing could help reassure the community.

Some Residents Still Feel Safe Despite Concerns

Despite the recent statistics on crime in Madeira, not all respondents share the same worries. Around 9.2% of those surveyed say they have always felt safe in Madeira, indicating that they haven’t noticed any major changes in security. Another 6.7% feel that isolated incidents don’t reflect a broader trend and thus haven’t impacted their sense of security.

Portugal Rankths 7th On Global Peace Index

Despite these trends, Portugal remains one of the safest countries in the world. According to the Global Peace Index, it ranks as the seventh most peaceful nation, reflecting its overall low levels of crime and violence compared to many other countries.
