Transport Workers Threaten New 48-Hour Strike Over Pay Dispute
The Transport Workers' Union continues to push for fair wages and firmly states that it will not back down from its demands. Their could be new and prolonged strikes if no agreement is reached.
Union Demands Urgent Talks with Authorities
The National Union of Drivers and Other Transport Workers (SNMOT) has warned of a 48-hour strike unless their demands are addressed. They are requesting new meetings with the Regional Government and ACIF, the transport authority, to resolve the dispute.
There have been no raises in ticket prices or wages, and we are losing purchasing power every year.
Manuel Oliveira, a union representative, criticized Horários do Funchal for spreading false information about the recent strike. He denied the company's claim that only 17 drivers participated and highlighted that drivers are doing the work of both drivers and conductors without proper pay.
The union is pushing for further talks in hopes of avoiding another strike. They are determined to reach a fair agreement before any disruptions occur again. The dissatisfaction among workers is however growing, with many calling for better pay and conditions. If no resolution is found soon, another strike could further affect Funchal’s public transport services.
