The Trash Traveler Starts Ocean Cleanup Walk In Madeira

Environmental activist The Trash Traveler starts walking Madeira's coast today, raising awareness about plastic pollution.

Raising Awareness About Madeira’s Coeastline

The environmental activist, The Trash Traveler, embarks on a journey to clean and raise awareness about the importance of protecting Madeira's beautiful coastline. This afternoon, May 20th, marked the official start of The Trash Traveler's trek along the island, following a successful 1152km mainland Portugal coastal cleanup in 2020.

Creating Awareness While Cleaning

This year's "The Ocean Hike" challenge encompasses Madeira, Porto Santo, and the Desertas Islands. The Trash Traveler's journey on Madeira begins at 2 pm today at Almirante Reis. Over the coming weeks, they will be engaging with islanders and visitors alike, promoting responsible waste disposal and highlighting the threats posed by plastic pollution in our oceans.

Who Is The Trash Traveler?

The Trash Traveler is the moniker of Andreas Noe, a former molecular biologist from Germany who radically changed course to become a champion for cleaner oceans. Noe's approach is anything but conventional. He combines awareness-raising with fun and positivity. Noe walked the entire coastline of Portugal in just 58 days, collecting over 1.6 tons of plastic with the help of hundreds of volunteers. This collected plastic wasn't just thrown away; it was transformed into art installations to further amplify the message of ocean conservation.
