Lobo Marinho Might Have Felt Threatened By Divers
At least three Lobo Marinhos have been spotted in the waters near Cais do Sardinha, at the tip of Ponta do São Lourenço. Over the past weekend, four divers entered the sea without expecting any unusual encounters. However, while using an underwater scooter, two of them were attacked by one of the Lobo Marinhos known to inhabit the area.
The divers were using a scooter at medium depth when the animal initially swam past them before returning with aggressive behavior. Experts suggest that the Lobo Marinho may have felt threatened by the scooter or was defending its territory. The exact cause of the reaction remains uncertain, but a mix of factors could have contributed to the situation.

Experienced Diver Manages to Fend Off the Attack
One of the divers successfully defended himself from the Lobo Marinho's charge. Reports confirm that there was no prior interaction between the divers and the animal, and they were familiar with the guidelines for marine wildlife encounters. A professional in the field, who knows one of the people involved, vouched for their experience and adherence to safety protocols.
Officials advise that anyone who spots one of these animals should leave the water immediately. Whether on the beach, swimming, or aboard a boat, people should avoid interactions with a Lobo Marinho.
Authorities Urge People to Keep Their Distance
The Institute for Nature Conservation continues to stress the importance of maintaining a safe distance from a Lobo Marinho. Officials advise that anyone who spots one of these animals should leave the water immediately. Whether on the beach, swimming, or aboard a boat, people should avoid interactions with Lobo Marinhos. Authorities have previously warned against approaching the animals for photographs.
Portugal’s Only Lobo Marinho Colony Remains Protected
The only Lobo Marinho colony in Portugal is located in the Desertas Islands, home to around 30 individuals, including five born last year. Conservationists work to protect the species and educate the public on how to coexist safely with these marine mammals. Encounters like the one in Madeira highlight the need for continued awareness and responsible behavior near wild animals.
