Ukrainians and advocates for a free, democratic world joined forces in Funchal, in solidarity against Russian aggression.

Ukrainians Honors Civilization and The Rule of Law

Ukrainians and Madeirans gathered in Funchal to celebrate Ukrainian Unity Day. This event is crucial for the Ukrainian community in Madeira, allowing them to honor their unity, reflect on past struggles, and stay connected to their homeland. Katerina Leacock, president of the Ucrânia com Amor , stressed the significance of the occasion, highlighting the ongoing challenges faced by Ukrainians in their homeland, such as daily bombings and the worries of separated families, thus reminding us of the struggle Ukraine has to endure.

Ukraine Fighting a War for The Rest of Europe

With hundreds of Ukrainians - both soldiers and civilians - dying every week a death brought upon them by the crimes of the Russian regime, Leacock shared a moving story about a Ukrainian couple in Madeira whose son is actively fighting for independence and democracy in Ukraine. Despite not being Ukrainian herself, Leacock expressed strong support and optimism, asserting that there is only one plan – the belief that Ukraine will win this war. Because there is no alternative neither for Ukraine nor for Europe, who fears aggression on NATO territory in case Ukraine can not prevail.

Ukrainians always remember the people who stayed there. Because of the news, or lack thereof, for fear that something has happened to the family, because the bombings continue daily. They are here, but their hearts are there and it is also important for them to know that we are with them!

Ukrainian Unity Day (Den' Sobornosti)

The Ukrainian Unity Day celebration marks the unification of eastern and western Ukraine in 1919. In Madeira, it serves as a platform for the Ukrainian community to unite, share stories, and draw attention to the struggles faced by their compatriots in Ukraine. Since the war began, more than 900 Ukrainians have sought refuge in Madeira, further strengthening the ties between the two communities.
