Union Deal: Tourism Workers to Earn €12 Above Minimum Wage

After months of challenging protests, the hospitality workers union secured a €12 increase on top of the regional minimum wage (€915) for thousands of tourism workers.

Agreement Proposes €65 Raise for All Workers

The Hospitality Workers Union in Madeira has suspended a protest that was planned for Thursday at the airport. This decision follows a preliminary agreement with the Funchal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACIF), in which the business group proposed a monthly salary raise of €65 for all workers in the sector.

The union, which had initially demanded a €75 increase, said this compromise meets them halfway between their demand and ACIF’s earlier minimum mandatory offer of €53. In addition to the salary increase, food and shift allowances would rise by 5 percent under the proposal.

Adolfo Freitas Acknowledges That the Fight was Difficult

I would like to say no, but I am almost obliged to say yes, because there is pressure, there is fear, there is blackmail in companies with bonds and workers' committees, and therefore, let's say, we are reaching a point that is very bad

Few Months of Strike Gets Workers €12 More per Month

Adolfo Freitas, a representative from the union, stated that the proposal ensures no worker earns less than the current minimum wage in the Madeira region. In fact, those who were currently earning the minimum which is set at €915, will now receive €12 more per month (€927). Although the union has paused its protest plans, the proposed agreement is not yet official. A final decision will be made during a workers’ assembly on Monday.
