Expect Strong Waves Reaching Heights of 4 Meters

The Port Authority of Funchal has issued an updated warning regarding strong winds and maritime agitation in the Madeira Archipelago until 6 am on January 12th. The warning specifies that waves can reach up to 4 meters. Wave conditions vary, with waves on the north coast ranging from 2 to 3 meters and on the south coast from 1.5 to 2.5 meters. These waves are gradually expected to increase to 2.5 to 3.5 meters, reaching 3.5 to 4 meters in the western part by Friday, January 12 in the morning hours.

In response to these conditions, the Port Authority again recommends precautions for both the maritime community and the general population. These precautions include:

  • closely monitoring moored and anchored boats

  • avoiding walks near the sea or in exposed areas

  • refraining from recreational fishing near cliffs and areas frequently hit by waves.

Tourists and Residents Are Asked to Take These Warnings Seriously

This warning aligns with the yellow warning previously issued by IPMA until Saturday afternoon. Residents and visitors need to adhere to these warnings and take necessary measures to ensure their safety and the safety of maritime activities during this period. The Port Authority had previously issued a warning for strong winds in the maritime region until 6 pm on January 11th.
