A Birthday Trip Turns into Tragedy near Paul do Mar
A 70-year-old woman died yesterday, at Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital in Madeira. The accident happened the day before, when a rockslide hit the car she was traveling in with her family between Fajã da Ovelha and Paul do Mar. The trip was meant to celebrate her son's birthday.
The car had just exited a tunnel on the regional road between Paul do Mar and Fajã da Ovelha around 6 p.m. when several rocks suddenly fell from a nearby hillside. One of the larger stones struck the rear of the car where the woman was seated between her two granddaughters.
Emergency Teams Respond Quickly, But Injuries Were Severe
The woman and her son were the most affected. She had serious injuries, while her son briefly lost consciousness. The other passengers -her daughter-in-law, who was driving, and the two children - were unharmed.
The woman was taken to the hospital alive and admitted to the intensive care unit. Unfortunately, her condition worsened overnight, and she passed away the following day.

The daughter -in -law would drive the car with the birthday girl next door and, in the back seat, the woman was following between the two granddaughters.
Family Was Celebrating a Birthday When Accident Happened
According to reports, the family was out for a drive to celebrate the son's birthday. While her son was treated for minor injuries at a local health center and released the same night, the emotional shock for the family, especially on what should have been a joyful day, is likely to last much longer.

This part of Madeira, known for its steep cliffs and narrow mountain roads, is often vulnerable to sudden rockslides - especially after rainfall or changes in temperature.
