TAP Takes the Top Spot for Pet-Friendly Travel
TAP Air Portugal has been named Europe’s best airline for traveling with pets, according to a ranking by AirAdvisor, a consumer advocacy startup specializing in air travel. The evaluation considered factors like in-cabin pet transport, options for larger animals as cargo, and access to exclusive airline lounges for pets and their owners.
The travel carrier must be soft-sided and measure no more than 45x30x23cm for cabin animals. Your pet booking needs to be done 48 hours in advance.

Anton Radchenko, CEO of AirAdvisor, highlighted the importance of these pet-friendly features. “Passengers need to ensure they meet all sanitary and documentation requirements to avoid last-minute surprises and make the journey enjoyable for everyone - pets included,” he said.
VIP (Very Important Pet) Treatment
TAP offers standout perks for pet owners, including allowing small dogs and cats into its airport lounges. Through the airline’s Miles&Go Pets program, travelers can even use miles to book tickets that include their furry companions. Each passenger is allowed to bring up to five pets, providing flexibility for multi-pet families. While TAP declined to comment on its top ranking, its commitment to meeting AirAdvisor’s criteria for pet travel clearly set it apart.
Prices for taking your pet in the cabin or hold vary based on domestic vs. international and how you book - either online or by phone. The range is from €40 for a domestic flight booked online to €160 for an intercontinental flight that’s booked any other way. In the hold, the fees are €80 for domestic, €120 for Europe, and €230 for intercontinental flights for pets and carriers that weigh no more than 32kg.

TAP isn’t alone in catering to jet-setting pets. Other airlines making the AirAdvisor list include:
Aegean Airlines: Pets can travel in the cabin, hold, or as cargo, though infants and pets aren’t allowed to share the cabin.
Lufthansa: Small pets can fly as carry-on baggage, with larger animals traveling in the hold. Lounges are also open to furry guests.
KLM: Offers options for cabin or hold transport, depending on the size of the pet.
SAS (Scandinavian Airlines System): Determines travel conditions based on the pet’s breed, size, weight, and age. Advance reservations are required due to limited space for pets.
Fur-Flights and Friendly Skies
AirAdvisor recommends researching airline policies thoroughly before booking a flight to ensure smooth travels with pets. With airlines like TAP setting the standard, pet owners can look forward to stress-free journeys for both them and their four-legged friends.
