Union Plans Meetings and Demonstrations at Companies’ Doorsteps
The Hotel Workers’ Union in Madeira is planning a series of new protests to demand better wages for workers in the tourism sector. These protests will include more direct forms of protest, such as meetings at companies, gatherings in front of businesses and public offices, and distributing flyers to tourists.
Adolfo Freitas made a point of expressing his regret over the lack of statements from the President of the Regional Government, Miguel Albuquerque, especially considering that the government spent the year taking credit for the positive state of tourism.
Union Leader Calls for Recognition of Workers’ Worth
Adolfo Freitas, president of the Hotel Workers’ Union, made it clear that they will continue fighting for fair pay. He emphasized that workers should not be treated as numbers but as individuals who deserve respect and decent salaries. He criticized the employers for offering inadequate solutions, stating that the union's goal is to secure meaningful wage increases.
Regional Government's Silence Criticized
Freitas also expressed disappointment with the regional government’s silence on the issue. He pointed out that, while the government has praised the region’s tourism success, it has failed to address the concerns of workers in the sector. The lack of response from the president, Miguel Albuquerque, was particularly noticeable.
