Young Tourist Falls to Death After Crossing Safety Barrier
A tragic accident happened this morning at the Pedra Rija viewpoint on the Vereda do Pico do Arieiro trail in Madeira. A young tourist from Germany, who was with three friends, lost his balance and fell about 200 meters while trying to take a photo outside the marked path. He did not survive the fall.
Officials are investigating the circumstances of the accident. The young tourist, who was accompanied by friends, reportedly climbed over a safety railing to take a photo in a dangerous area. He then lost his footing and fell.
40 People, a Drone and a Helicopter Come to the Rescue
Emergency services received a call at 11:38 a.m. and sent a rescue team. Thirteen members of the Bombeiros Voluntários Madeirenses (BVM), along with three vehicles, a drone unit, and a helicopter from the Regional Civil Protection Service, were dispatched.
However, thick fog made it impossible for the helicopter to assist.
More rescuers arrived in the afternoon, including police officers and members of a special rescue unit. Around 40 people took part in the operation. Because of the steep and heavily vegetated terrain, reaching the victim took several hours, and the recovery of the body is still ongoing.
Authorities Close Vereda do Pico do Arieiro Trail
After the accident, the Institute of Forests and Nature Conservation (IFCN) decided to close the Vereda do Pico do Arieiro trail. Officials have not said when it will reopen, as they are reviewing safety measures to prevent further accidents.
Officials Warn About Trail Safety
This incident is a strong reminder of the dangers of leaving marked paths in mountain areas. Authorities are asking hikers and tourists to follow safety rules and stay on official trails to avoid accidents. The Pico do Areeiro area is a popular but challenging destination, where sudden weather changes and steep drops can be very dangerous for those who do not follow safety guidelines.
